Annette Messager

My investigation into tied, bound and hanging figures has led me (with help from Blake to the left of me) to Messager's work - in particular her recent retrospective at the Hayward Gallery Annette Messager: The Messengers

I have decided that I would like to make a film that causes the entire audience to cry so hard they can barely keep it together.

The poet Margaret Scott once said (and I believe she may have been paraphrasing)-----

‘Great art will make you cry, laugh or throw-up’.

So I’ve chosen cry.  Cry like Silent Running.  Heart-breaking sobs of a ten year old.
Or maybe just a moment of tears.  Where you catch yourself  in the queue at the supermarket and the can of frozen beans (frozen beans?) reminds you of that feeling you had when you smelt that smell at that time in your life when that la la la .... and you trace it all back to ME. (or rather my ‘saddest film you will ever see’ film.)  It might not hit you directly, but it might seep in overtime and slowly piece by piece, tear your heart apart.

mmmmmmmmmmm... Why not laughter you cry? Well laughter should only be attempted when one has wit running through their veins. For sure, I could give you a chuckle or two.  But to make you laugh so hard that cardiac arrests become common place in MY cinema.  That a warning must be heeded and forms signed before you enter. I am very far from knowing how to do this.
And throwing up is just gross. Although I did throw up during ‘Requiem for a dream’ – and I must admit that that film was masterful. Very nauseating, but masterful.

The characters to the right are preparing themselves for action. They will be the ones that will hurt you. They will be the ones that will make you cry.

emo much?

This week we have been covering many ideas about character/ agents and behaviour.
The emotional investment in inanimate object has been a source of inspiration in my work for many years.  After a week of pondering the question “What constitutes life?” I couldn’t help but remember the first film that ever made me cry – Silent Running (1972) by Douglas Trumbull. It’s a science fiction film mainly concerning the deep space fate of a man and three drone robots – Huey, Dewey and Louie.
The final scene completely broke my ten-year-old heart - Dewey... drifting out into deep space..in his little rocket ship... with his little watering can.... caring for his little plant. Oh god! It ruined me for a week.

Andrew Stanton (WALL-E) and Duncan Jones (MOON) both have said their films have been inspired by Trumbull's 'Silent Running'

Isolation, loneliness and space robots. What more could a girl want?

I went to the Experimenta Utopia Exhibition yesterday afternoon. It is such an amazing collection of work, diverse yet completely cohesive.  The underlying theme of ‘the dream of a perfect world’ is subtly considered within all of the exhibits and I left with a fresh inspiration for life and my own work.  I also love the analogue elements (magic lanterns, the typewriter, the photocopier) combining with digital technology.

And the dance machine robot was just wicked!

I had the lovely honor today of presenting Karin Riederer to the staff and students at the Aim (Animation and Interactive Media) center.

We had a lovely casual Antipasto lunch, then all sat back to listen to Karin.

--------------------------------------------
Karin Riederer has had a very fluid, diverse and active career in the arts. Karin claims, “She gets a buzz out of helping people do what they want to do.”
Karin has been involved with art organisations and artists through her work as Arts & Community Cultural Development Officer through the City of Yarra.
She has worked with writers and illustrators as an editor, a publisher and a publicist for companies such as IAD Press, Penguin Books, Allen & Unwin, Lonely Planet and McGraw-Hill
Karin’s work has taken her to Alice Springs and the Central Western Desert Region of Australia as the manager of the Tjanpi Desert Weavers – a project initiated in 1995 by the NPY Woman’s council.
The Tjanpi meaning ‘dry grass’, Desert Weavers is a project working with indigenous women, originated initially as basket weaving workshops to help create employment opportunities, and also to create an opportunity for cultural and creative exchange within communities. Through her role as manager, Karin has been a part of the Desert Weavers community achieving serious recognition in the arts industry.
Karin is currently the Tenant Liaison Coordinator at the beautiful Abbottsford convent, in Abbotsford, just near the river and the Collingwood children’s farm.
The labyrinth-esque passages of the Covent are home to over 50 studios spaces with currently over 115 tenants practicing in a multitude of disciplines including all walks of art, visual art, design, animation, digital work, sound and music.

These are my the characters I am using for a

They look quite sweet and docile at the moment,

but I'm hoping they will get up to some mischief.
